Hedge fund manager John Hargrove has been using a PayPal Giving Fund to raise money for his family.
In August, the fund’s founder, Phil Pendergast, received a $2.3 million gift from eBay founder Pierre Omidyar.
Hargrovel’s daughter, Jill, and his nephew, Matt, are now part of the fund, which has raised $9.5 million.
It has also given $2 million to two other family foundations, the Lippert Center for Ethics at UCLA and the L.A. County Housing Authority.
“We have a lot of friends who have been helping me out,” Hargrot said.
“And I just wanted to make sure that I’m helping them out and helping the community.”
Phil Pendergonst, the hedge fund’s co-founder, said Hargrooves donation was “extraordinary.”
“John is the kind of guy that always says, ‘I’m not a philanthropist,'” Pendergtast said.
“The gift is extremely gratifying for him and he’s been a great friend.”
Hargrot says he’s received donations from a number of sources including his mother, who helped him get a mortgage, his wife, who helps him manage a hedge fund, and from the Lasky family, a hedge funds manager who’s a close friend.
Herr’s daughter Jill is one of the people he’s known since childhood, but he’s made a point of saying that he’s only a friend to Jill and her friends.
“I have friends that I haven’t met for 15 years, and I want to see them when I’m older,” Harr said.
But his philanthropy isn’t just about his family, as the Pendergarsts have become a leading force in helping the homeless and helping people who’ve been left behind by California’s housing crisis.
Hargrowts philanthropy has been instrumental in raising money for other charities, including a program that provides food for the homeless.
“It’s very rare to get a donor from an outside source, which we don’t get,” he said.
For the last 10 years, the family has raised money for the California homeless shelter at Camp Spalding in Santa Clarita.
“There’s a whole lot of people out there that don’t have a home and they’re just living in the streets,” Jill Hargros said.
Harr said he’s also raised money to help other people in need.
“My father always wanted to do something that was good for the community, and that’s been very much the foundation of his philanthropic work,” Jill said.
The Laskys were recently featured in an HBO documentary on homelessness called, “How to Save a Homeless Family.”
“It was really good to be in a position to help somebody else in need, because there’s not a lot out there to help people who have no home,” Matt Laskym said.
And the family is also involved in the fight to help protect California’s wildland fire laws.
In 2014, they helped pass legislation to protect wildland fires in the state from being put out by fire trucks.
“Our work has been really important to save the state,” Matt said.
